With snowflakes flying and temperatures dropping, out come the snowboards, skis and skates. Ice hockey, figure skating, downhill and cross country skiing are popular winter sports amongst children in cold weather areas like Pittsburgh.

In order to keep kids safe and to maximize their performance, there are a few cold weather-training tips to practice.

Ahh… the holidays! Did I just see you cringe at that thought? If so, you are not alone… and if not, you’re in good company. The problem is that whatever company you keep, they are probably tempting you with delicious morsels or calorie-packed nogs to sip by the glow of the fire. And who can turn down that warm and fuzzy moment?

But why do those cozy moments have to involve food? And, why is it so difficult to politely refuse the bounty of temptations our well-intending family and friends offer to us?

The primary side effect of acute periods of exercise is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). To prevent hypoglycemia, carbohydrate consumption can be increased or medications decreased.
