The Pirates finished the week 2-4, dropping all three straight well-pitched games in St. Louis before bouncing back to take two-of-three against the Yankees at PNC Park.

When you best the Yankees in a three-game series, the week couldn’t have been all that bad.

Josh Bell and Jordy Mercer each homored as the Pirates used plenty of offense and superb bullpen help to handle the Yankees.

It took just the first two pitches in the bottom 1st for Jordy Mercer to set the tone for his club Friday night.

Over the years, the pitcher win has been valued less and less. Chalk it alongside hockey’s +/- and a quarterback’s win-loss record as fairly worthless stats that are more team accomplishments than an individual’s.

But danggummit, if there was ever a player who needs to get that first win out of the way, it’s Tyler Glasnow.

The Pirates may have been swept and had another sweep completed this past week, but it was not all bad, going 3/3 in Chicago over the weekend. A look back at the good and bad of a 3-4 record in the second week of the season.

Jameson Taillon did not allow an earned run in seven masterful innings, the Pirates scratched out three runs in the seventh and Adam Frazier followed with a three-run homer in the eighth to lead Pittsburgh to a 6-1 win and a three-game sweep of the Cubs on Sunday at Wrigley Field.

The Pirates scored six times in the final two innings to rally from a 1-0 deficit. The barrage was capped off by a three-run homer by Adam Frazier in the 8th inning.
