The only surprising thing about Pitt’s ouster of Steve Pederson as athletic director is the fact that it’s seen as a surprise.

Actually, the fact that the university is willing to eat four years and $2 million of Pederson’s remaining contract is surprising.

Pitt has relieved athletic director Steve Pederson of his duties, and announced that offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph will serve as interim head football coach.

Paul Chryst, who served the past three seasons as the University of Pittsburgh’s head football coach, has accepted the same position at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin.

After a freshman season which saw him share carries with various upperclassmen, Pitt running back James Conner has emerged as one of the premiere players in the nation, carrying the Panthers’ offense in the process.

Through 12 games, Conner rushed for 1,675 yards and 24 touchdowns, all while averaging over six yards per rush.

Pitt sophomore running back James Conner, who broke Tony Dorsett's single-season scoring records as well as several conference records, has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year.

James Conner battled a hip injury to score two touchdowns, Tyler Boyd had 263 all-purpose yards and Pitt became bowl eligible with a 35-23 upset at Miami.

The victory is Pitt's first over the Hurricanes since 1997, and their first win in Miami since 1963, snapping an 0-9-1 streak in south Florida.

Tyler Boyd caught 7 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown, backup running back Chris James ran for 122 yards and the Pitt defense forced three turnovers as the Panthers hammered Syracuse 30-7.

The Panthers sent off their seniors with a much needed win Saturday afternoon. The Syracuse Orange were in town for Senior Day as Pitt was looking to avoid a fourth straight ACC loss.

North Carolina's Marquis Williams gained nearly 400 yards from scrimmage and accounted for four touchdowns as the Tar Heels beat Pitt 40-35, wasting a 220-yard effort by Pitt's James Conner.

Thomas Sirk ran five yards for a Duke score in the second overtime to lift the Blue Devils over Pitt 51-48, spoiling a 263-yard rushing performance from the Panthers' James Conner.

Pitt fell to 4-5 (2-3 in the ACC) on the year, including five loses in their last six games. Duke improves to 7-1 (3-1 in the ACC) and stays atop the ACC Coastal division.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets strolled into Heinz Field and destroyed the Pitt Panthers on homecoming. The Jackets scored eight touchdowns as they buried Pitt 56-28 Saturday afternoon.

Pitt’s fourth ACC game began in about the worst way possible. The Panthers lost five fumbles in the first quarter, tying the FBS record for most fumbles lost in a quarter.
